Beltane: Ways to Decorate your Altar & Celebrate

Happy Beltane everyone! Occurring in the Northern Hemisphere on April 30th- May 1st, Beltane is filled with passionate sexual energy as it is a time where the union between the Gods and Goddesses are celebrated. In fact, due to the elevated feminine and masculine energies, all Magick will be very powerful today. It’s also known as May Day. Personally, I will be doing some protection spells and spending time with the love of my life today.

One of my favorite ways to celebrate the sabbats is to decorate my altar with the correspondences for that particular celebration. Here are some things you can include on your own altar at home:

Colors: Brown, green, pink, white, yellow, and purple

Herbs: Catnip, lemon, mint, mugwort, and woodruff

Flowers: Daisy, ivy, lily of the valley, roses, and violets

Crystals and Gems: Bloodstone, emerald, sapphire, peridot, amber, and rose quartz

Scents: Rose, juniper, jasmine, lemon, mint, violet, vanilla, and clove

Tarot Keys: The Emperor, the Empress, the High Priestess, and the Magician

Symbols: Flowers, flower crowns, wreaths, candles, and the maypole

Metals: Gold, Copper, and Silver

Animals: Bees, cows, dove, frog, and rabbits.

My 2025 Beltane altar (above). Sliced lemons make excellent candle holders!

Activities to do on Beltane:

  1. Divination: excellent day to use your tarot cards, runes, or crystal ball.
  2. Feasting
  3. Fertility magick
  4. Handfastings or other romantic celebrations
  5. Lighting bonfires: You can always substitute candles if you live somewhere you can’t light a fire outside.
  6. Make offerings to deities, ancestors, and fairies
  7. Dance around a Maypole (I would love to do this if it wasn’t going to be 90 degrees in Arizona today.)
  8. Nature walks
  9. Purification ceremonies
  10. Protection rituals
  11. Sexual activities
  12. Singing
