One of the best books I have ever found on Witchcraft is Juliet Diaz’s Witchery, and it’s where this purification spray recipe comes from. I have added a few steps and notations to the recipe, but all credit goes to her, and I have put the citation at the bottom of this post. Using ingredients found easily at the grocery store, this spray is perfect for the beginning Witch!
Purification sprays can be used in several ways, such as cleansing your alter space or tools. It can also be used to purify any section of your home of negative intentions, energies, thoughts, and overall vibes. Personally, I use this spray on my husband’s home office after he finishes work every day. His job tends to be high stress, and this spray just neutralizes the room to give him fresh start the next morning. I use it in my office whenever I have a bad case of writer’s block, or if imposter syndrome is hitting hard that day.
What you need:
- 16 fl oz of water (You can use moon water to really amp up the spell)
- Half of a Lemon
- Small handful of basil leaves
- Pinch of thyme
- Spray bottle (size is up to you)
- A small saucepot (This does not need to be a special pot, any kitchen one is fine.)
Steps in making the spray:
- Cleanse the pot you will be using to make the spray. Using incense smoke is one of the easiest ways to cleanse a tool. Swirl the incense clockwise three times while envisioning the smoke clearing the pot of any negative energies.
- Place the cup or bottle holding the water into your hands and speak your intentions into it. I typically chant “purify and protect from negative energies, thoughts, intentions, and vibes” three times, but you can place whatever intentions you desire into the water.
- Pour the water into the pan and bring it to a boil.
- Optional: cut a protection sigil into the half of a lemon. The sigil can be carved into the rind or flesh of the lemon, just watch out for juice!
- Once the water is boiling, add the lemon, thyme, and basil to the pot. Simmer your mixture for 10 minutes, then remove it from the heat and let it cool.
- Optional: using a pen or marker, draw your protection sigil onto the spray bottle. Add crystals that match your intentions into the jar, for example I place 7 black tourmaline chips into my spray bottle to amplify my spell just a bit more.
- Once cooled, strain the herbs from the mixture and place the liquid into your spray bottle. I use smaller spray bottles, so I freeze any leftover spray to save for a later time.
- I refrigerate the spray to make it last longer.
Using the spray:
- Standing in the middle of the room you wish to cleanse, spritz the bottle whatever number of times feels right to you and restate your intentions. This could be out loud, in your head, or sung to the universe. Whatever feels right to you!
- Picture the negativity or darkness draining away from the room and out of the window, leaving a clean, fresh energy in its place.
- Enjoy your newly cleansed space!
